I regularly see portfolios where I quietly think 'wow'. Sharp photography, beautiful colors, perfect typography. And then I look at the numbers. Many likes, few bookings. Many saves, few calls. Beautiful work that doesn't work. That isn't a creativity problem, it's a structural problem.
Because content that sells always has two layers: the layer you feel (aesthetics, atmosphere, feeling) and the layer that works (positioning, goal, sequence). If you miss one of the two, it keeps faltering.
The three questions behind every good post
- Who specifically are you writing this for? Not 'entrepreneurs'. But: the entrepreneur in that specific phase, with that specific doubt.
- What do you want them to think, feel or do after this post? One answer is enough. Three at once is none.
- How does this fit into your bigger story? One loose post is no one. The same thought in ten different ways, that's what they remember.
Aesthetics do the inviting, strategy does the work
Imagine your brand as a beautiful coffee bar. The facade, the lighting, the cups, the napkin — that is your aesthetics. It brings people in. But what makes them come back is the coffee itself, the way you greet them, the fact that you remember their name. That is your strategy. An empty coffee bar with a beautiful facade is still an empty coffee bar.
"Behind every color, photo, message and choice sits a strategy. Otherwise, it's just a pretty picture."
A concrete example
A client of mine, a branding strategist with five years of experience, mainly posted 'inspiration'. Pretty quotes, aesthetic mood boards, a tip here and there. Plenty of likes, too few clients. We didn't make her feed prettier — it was already pretty. We rebuilt her content around three themes that connect exactly with the doubts of her ideal client. Same style, different content. Three months later: twice as many calls, with significantly better matches.
What you can do this week
Choose three of your last posts. Answer the three questions above for each, honestly. For one of those posts, you'll find the answer comes easily. For another, you'll notice you just don't know. That last one tells you more about your strategy than ten Reels combined.
Because beautiful work absolutely belongs — I still believe that. But beauty without structure is creativity without direction. And direction is exactly what makes a brand grow.
